On this day: Byrd flies over the South Pole


American Explorer Richard Byrd made his pioneering flight over the South Pole, flying from Ross Ice Shelf to the South Pole and back on November 29, 1929. Byrd and his companion of three accomplished the epic, historical journey within less than 19 hours.
