At age 14 had Marie Antoinette entered into an arranged marriage with the heir to the French throne. She had been unable to conceive a child with her husband, who was merely a year older than her. For another two and a half years, their marriage would not fulfill its primary purpose – the conception of a royal heir. Even though it was widely understood (and not only within the court) that Louis XVI was impotent due to his phimosis – a problem that was compounded by his bashful and clumsy behavior, which lacked any trace of masculinity – it was the young queen who was held responsible for the disappointment and who ended up bearing the stigma of a fruitless marriage.
