The rise and fall of the shah

He was taken to a side entrance of the parliament in secret, crouched between the front and back seats of an old Chrysler. Only when he arrived did he don his dress uniform and sash and tie a sword to his side, then he stood before the dumbfounded representatives and took his oath. The circumstances could not have been more demeaning when the 21-year-old Mohammad Reza Pahlavi became Iranian shah. The young ruler, of course, had his reasons for precaution.
