Surprising 7: Femmes fatales and the myths surrounding them

The poisonous Lucrezia Borgia

Lucrezia Borgia, the most notorious poisoner in history, had numerous lovers. The legend goes that men around her were dropping like flies. Many of them were said to be killed with the poison kept in her hollow ring. The “Black Widow” was also rumoured to have had incestuous relations with her father and her brother.
The legend of the vicious murderess was probably shaped by Victor Hugo’s drama from 1833 and the opera by Gaetano Donizetti. There is no real evidence to suggest that Lucrezia ever harmed anybody.
