The bearded queen of Egypt

With only a few exceptions, the rulers of Ancient Egypt were male. Although women could have a say in politics as regents to under-age pharaohs or as wives of the ruler, there were only a few cases in the history of the North African empire when they would ascend the throne. The reign of Hatshepsut, the fifth pharaoh of the 18th Dynasty between 1479 and 1458 BC, was characterized by stability, peaceful development and monumental constructions.
