Reconstructing the lives of people long dead and using our knowledge of the tools and techniques prevalent in their time are now all considered perfectly normal. But to sail thousands of kilometers on the Pacific Ocean with a raft made according to specifications from a distant period requires true bravery. With his now-famous expedition, Thor Heyerdahl proved that it was possible to cross from South America to the islands of Polynesia, and that a lack of technology could no longer be used to refute the theory that the area was populated from the east.
