Spartacus: myth and reality

Marx considered him a “great general […], of noble character, a ‘real representative’ of the proletariat of ancient times.” Garibaldi and Che Guevara were also great admirers of Spartacus. He is one of the best-known historical figures of antiquity. During the 19th and 20th centuries he became a symbol of rebellion against unjust oppression. His figure inspired many works of world literature, several film adaptations and even a ballet by Khachaturian. Still, what do we know about Spartacus the man?
