On August 11, 1934, the first civilian prisoners arrived at Alcatraz. Alcatraz, the former military prison, was turned into a high- security federal prison in the summer of 1934 for the real trouble makers causing scandals in other federal prisons in the US. Until 1963 when it was closed 1,500 prisoners had been held in the facility and due to deadly currents of the waters of San Francisco Bay nobody could successfully escape from ”The Rock”.
