According to the latest end-of-the-world prediction, human civilization on Earth should have been wiped out about a half a year ago. “Experts” came to this conclusion on the basis of the misinterpretation of the Mayan calendar. According to calculations, the first day of the Mayan calendar corresponds to3114 BC in our calendar. Thirteen baktuns (each lasting for 394 years) represent a full cycle (5,125 years). Many believed that the Mayan calendar was to “expire” on the 21st of December, 2012. Scientists made fruitless efforts to explain that although a special importance was attached to the number 13 in Mayan religion and the end of the 13th baktun symbolizes a special date, the Maya never predicted an apocalypse for this day.
