From pirate to admiral: The story of Francis Drake
The second half of the 16th century was the age of expansive discovery. Spain was at the height of its powers and it seemed like there was no stopping the empire, which had become astoundingly rich from the gold mined in its colonies. However, the Kingdom of England, divided by the conflict between Protestants and Catholics, was about to take control of the seas, thanks in part to mercantile endeavors that were making investments in a very lucrative field at the time: piracy. The most successful pirate of the era was, without a doubt, Francis Drake.
