The Birth of a Nation premieres in New York
On March 3, 1915, some weeks after its debut in Los Angeles, the Birth of a Nation debuted in New York City. The nearly 3-hour-long epic movie has been regarded as the first truly Hollywood blockbuster that grossed a massive $10 million ($200 million in today’s money). However D.W. Griffith’s work was highly controversial. With its negative portrayal of African Americans and glorifying the white supremacist organization, the Ku Klux Klan it caused both and outcry and enthusiasm in the American public.
