Birth of the Russian ‪Empire‬

The foundation of the ‪#‎Russian‬ Empire was laid down by Ivan the Terrible (1547–1584), who was the first Russian ruler to be crowned as ‪#‎Tsar‬ of All the Russians, pursuing a successful expansionist policy.

In the period spanning from 1462 until the sale of ‪#‎Alaska‬ (1867) the territory of Russia – extending by 58.3 square miles (151 km²) daily – increased 52-fold.

By the end of the 19th century, ethnic Russians composed 45 percent of the population of the Russian Empire, which became home to more than 100 ethnic groups.
